Parking in Lucca

View larger map (including detailed notes)

If you are holding your wedding ceremony or reception inside the historic center of Lucca, you have probably already asked yourself about the parking situation. As most know, this part of Lucca is mostly only open to resident traffic, with just a few areas around the periphery that allow non-residents to enter and park. Here are a few hints to help you and your guests navigate the sometimes confusing world of parking in Lucca:

  • There is no free non-resident parking inside the walls. Always assume that once in the walls, you must pay at the parking meter usually located within 100 meters of where you've parked. Get a ticket from the meter and place it inside your car, on the dashboard.
  • Paid parking is indicated by blue lines. Do not park your car in the yellow lines, these spaces are reserved for residents.
  • Lucca is divided up into zone A and B for traffic. Unless you are driving to your hotel to drop-off/ pick-up bags, do not enter either zone with your car. There will be a sign with a red circle and the words “zona pedonale”, when you see this sign, do not enter the street that is beyond it.
  • Parking lots with a large capacity inside the walls are: Mazzini, Lorenzini, Cittadella and Piazza Santa Maria.
  • To those who have made previous trips to Lucca, the lot in Piazza San Francesco has recently been reduced to just side street parking, so your chances of finding a spot are much lower now.
  • If you park outside of the historical center by the walls, make sure you park in a marked space and not on the grass, or you run a good chance of getting a ticket.
  • If you are unlucky enough to get a parking ticket, you can go to the post office on the intersection of via Valisisneri and via delle Trombe with the ticket and pay it there. See the letter icon on the map indicating where to find the largest post office inside the city.
  • If you are really unlucky and they tow your car away, pretty rare but it can happen, then you'll need to call the municipal police (polizia municipale) at tel. 0583 44 2727. They'll tell you where to find your car or come and unblock it, if that is all that is necessary. You must pay the fine in full and have proof of payment before they will release your car back to you.

Shoes

Mood If, like many brides, you'd like for your immediate bridal party to do a scenic photographic tour of Lucca and the walls just after the ceremony, then you'll appreciate this find. Instead of cursing the cobblestone pavement that you originally found charming and now are discovering is punishing on your high heels, stop by a great shoe store on via Filungo called, “Mood”. They have these beautiful high heeled shoes made with inch thick discs attached to the bottoms of the soles of the shoe. They allow you to wear heels that look 4 inches but in fact are only 3 in terms of actual height you need to balance. In fact to me, when I wear them, it feels like I'm wearing no more than a comfortable pump. I've been wearing them this entire 2008 season and have been super comfortable in them. No more back aches or sore knees.

Civil Ceremony Rehearsal at Palazzo Orsetti

Palazzo Orsetti - Green Room Many people have asked me about their right to conduct rehearsals of their civil ceremony at Palazzo Orsetti before the day of the wedding. I've spoken at length to both guards and here is their unofficial answer: they aren't thrilled about you doing it, but if you must, they ask that you do it for after lunch Monday through Friday and that you keep your voices down so as not to disturb the town council if it is in session. They also ask that you keep the number of people in your party down to the bare minimum.

The Great Outdoors

Wedding Accessory Dreaming of that beautiful Lucca outdoor wedding at sunset overlooking a picturesque olive grove or field of sunflowers? Here is one thing to keep in mind, sunset is when the mosquitoes come out and start to bite. You can still do your wedding outdoors in a scenic location, but remember to ask your planner to provide you with low terra cotta candle pots filled with citronella ( a natural mosquito deterrent). If you are having the wedding near a non-chlorinated body of water, I would go the extra mile and ask if the florist can spray the area for you on they day. As long as you have no toddlers or pets in the area, you should be fine. If you have toddlers, stick with the citronella and hire a babysitter to keep watch of them so they don't go playing with all of the pretty candles. In the months of June, July and August, I always keep cans of Off/Autan spray in the bathrooms so that guests can help themselves. Nothing worse than swollen itchy guests.

Cool Wedding in Lucca

Lucca Town Hall - DetailPalazzo Orsetti, the Lucca Town Hall, has always been a popular place to hold a civil ceremony. Now, even more welcoming is the airconditioning they've installed. Hallelujah! Now, even civil ceremonies held in July will be comfortable.

Get married in a historic villa near Lucca

Great news for anyone wishing to marry in a civil ceremony in Lucca this year. A beautiful historic villa just 9 km away from Lucca has been approved for the 2009 wedding season to hold legally valid civil ceremonies within the villa itself. Word is, there will be more villas that follow suit. Yippee! See my main site for a description of the villa
