Tuscany: Day trip: San Gimignano
San Gimignano
is a beautiful hill town, close to Sienna. It has been
dubbed "The Tuscan Manhattan", because of its many towers, that
give in a unique skyline. The town itself is very well preserved, and you will
certainly enjoy a walk through its ancient cobblestone streets.
The only drawback of San Gimignano is that it is really overcrowded, it seems to live only by and for the tourists. and it lacks the authenticity of other less known towns.
How to get to San Gimignano
It will take you about an hour and a half to get from Lucca to San Gimignano, provided you avoid rush hour around Florence, where traffic can be very bad.
From Lucca, take the highway towards Florence, then follow the signs for Sienna. Take the exit Poggibonsi North, then follow the signs to San Gimignano. Park in one of the parking lots around the town.
